Disable Ads
Default In Game Mic Chat

I cant find search for some reason and it didnt show up on the list of ideas so here it goes..

I really would like an in game chat to be enabled in the game. I am tired of loading up vent, GSC, teamspeak or another type of chat program. I wish you could talk through the game on a mic. Lots of games have this and its really neat (WoW, Call of Duty 2, Ext).

I really think this would be great for the game. There would be a button you press in game that shows you are talking. There would be like a party chat and make different channels for your guild/alliance/outpost ext.

To make it less confusing it would be disabled in every outpost/except guild hall. The guild hall and the explorable areas/pvp areas would have team chat in it (without the party chat). The party chat would work like this:

You would be in an outpost and click on a button in the menu. From there you would be able to pick a chat (if one exists) or make a new chat. From that chat you would have admin, be able to kick or ban anyone from your chat space. In that chat space you would be able to make new channels, sub channels, and change the voice quality (maybe).

Send some ideas on this topic, I would really like to see what everyone thinks. Like I said, I am tired of loading up different voice chat things, downloading them, typing in stuff, and then taking up processes (maybe this is the problem for a few others as well)

Thanks

I do believe Gaile herself said once that they wouldn't add voice chat to Guild Wars.

I agree with that. It's pointless and would only eat up server resources.

It would be a waste of money for Anet and most people use henchies and heroes so wouldn't need it. It's only needed for high ranked GvG guilds who need quick communication so no I dont think they should put it in.

actually i use a voip whenever i do anything without heros and henchies, its nice but the server space is too large for anet to handle atm, like all good suggestions i have to say "maybe in GW2"

It'd be better if GW just shipped with a VOIP program that could be run on the party leader's computer.

Quit trying to copy WoW! lol...

anyway Anet doesn't have enough funds for such a major project.

Only the "good" players use Vent/TS right now. I'd like to keep it that way. By not having it easily accessable in the game, you keep the "noob you suck you petifile," etc people off voice chat. Just look at Halo 2/3's integrated voice chat system. Its not really that useful, its mostly just used to hurl insults at people. What a great "improvement."

whats so hard about loading up Ventrilo and Teamspeak anyways, it takes like 30 seconds max. Agreeing with HawkofStorms id have to say that having VoIP over the GW client would just fuel kids to run thier mouthes which is annoying enough to hear when you click on All chat, and thats without hearing thier little unpubertised voices...

WoW added voip in a recent update actually. But to add one into guild wars would not be very cost efficient since there is no monthly fee. It would cost money to program into and then the extra server and bandwidth load wouldn't be worth it.

DDO had VoiP first but from what I heard, they had server problems because of it.

Server resources would be strained running VoIP sessions for that many people, and I'm happy to just use Ventrilo anyway.

I have to agree to a point... I don't want the server to get lagged down with voice packets when there are 3rd party programs that already handle that task very well and because tis separate it does not effect the game server in the process.

However I have to say there is no more rewarding and fun aspect of any game then playing with Voice chat enabled and everyone on microphones talking to each other while playing. I use teamspeak for our alliance, and we have 3 servers between the 10 guilds... The main server is for our entire gaming clan and muti games, the other 2 are more specific for Guild Wars alone... Still getting new people online and using mics is hard enough now... imagine if it was riddled with Microphone spam for gold resellers or item trading spam... That would destroy it for everyone...

Please keep Voice communication in private hands. Its better all around that way.

I've only heard snippets of automated vocal trade spam from other games. It would be a cool feature for Anet to implement, but there are just as many problems with that as well.

Our guild has been together since long before GW was a dream, and comms are a necessity. However Teamspeak and Ventrilo are more than adequate. 99% of the time text chat is turned off anyway.

You know what i would support? In game overlay support...

Remember the CE of GW Prophecies came with Teamspeak and headset... so obviously even Anet from the very beginning had the vision to know people would use something like TS to talk to each other while playing... Vent is equally as good IMHO, but I like some of the free to host use in the TS licence for non profit gaming clans.

It woul dbe nice to see native overlay support for TS or VEnt in GW so those 3rd party programs could continue to propsper, but the functionality of some thigns like room switching or mic muting, or seeing who is talking could be brought in game, with little resource requirements to the game.

I use this overlay for TS and love it...
http://www.teamspeakoverlay.com/
Unfortantly because of how Vista Broke many applications functionality with DX overlay and DX hook systems including Xfire, it does not work on Vista or 64bit installs ;(

Really makes thing come together nicely however for those that can use it. If Anet would integrate something like this for TS and Vent it would be VERY VERY well received.

WoW has now or is getting ingame VoIP in a patch, just an fyi.

more on topic:

seems like an unnecessary luxury that could just eat up the server

/notsigned

use vent or TS if really needed

Buy a vent server, or *gasp* download the free client and use others servers....

Dont be cheap AND or lazy. (Servers can range from like 5$ a month or so, very cheap)

Plus I agree with everyone who said it would eat up resources...do we really want more lag? Answer...No.

I use a headset all the time while gaming in fact gw is one of the few multiplayer online games I don't use it with 100% of the time.

Almost all the other games I team up with friends first then go to the game.
GW being a continuous game where you are in the game environment whether activly playing or not causes me to play it differently.
I imagine some form of voip essential for decent team play pvp gvg.

problems
Volume settings for one we find there is always a set up period when people join one too loud another too quiet.
Also having it voice activated means several talk at once and you get nowhere.

So I recon in GW
It would be usefull for a party in pve provided only the party leader talks during fights.
Guildhalls yes I would and do use it there

Could be usefull outside of that if there where key commands like ts and ventrillo use to change channels that way you could meet up in town assign a channel form a party and set off on voice.
If lag was a problem you would have to do what most large clans do and have a server pc to run it all.
At the moment we get by with drawing attack plans and routs on the map and the occasional use of voice.

To sum up the only reason for an ingame voip system is because there are far too many voip programs.
If there was one standard talk program we would all be using it and the endless problems of meet you on skype ? Oh now we use TS its loads better no no we use Ventrillo Skype Sucks.

Only way forward I see for voice in GW would be either built in voip with gw2 or at least one bundled with the game with enough in game features to make many people use it,that would be usefull.
ie
If it allowed voice commands of game commands like, emotes then people could say dance sit play air guitar etc and not have to type.
Some sad people "prob me" would use that.

as for voice in gw I wish everyone luck but don't see it getting off the ground outside guilds.

Well its nice to just talk, and not have to load it up I think. Also, WoW added VoIP last Tuesday.

Well if GW decided to add VoIP I Think everyone will benefit from us , not just the high ranked guilds. Some people don't have a vent/teamspeak server and they would like to talk to others on their team, say TA or HA. If ANET decided to add it I'm sure they would work out the sound/kinks...ext.

It would be nice but would have to be easy to avoid irritations. We do use TS and it really helps with game play. I find that I never see the text when I am busy and in that case TS is brilliant. It however may be another good reason to avoid PuGs.
